How Does The Laser Tattoo Removal Work:

The Q-Switch laser emits light onto the tattooed skin area during a tattoo removal session. This laser light is specifically absorbed by the ink particles in the tattoo, leaving surrounding skin tissue and chromophores unaffected.

 

The absorbed laser energy causes the tattoo ink particles to heat up and fragment into smaller particles.

 

In the days and weeks following each treatment, the body’s immune system takes over, naturally eliminating these fragmented ink particles. This gradual process ensures the safety of the procedure, causing the tattoo to fade. With successive treatments, more ink particles shatter and are removed, eventually clearing the skin of the tattoo.

 

Tattoo ink is notoriously resilient and difficult to remove, requiring high fluence (energy or power), which only Q-Switch lasers can provide. These lasers emit pulses that last mere nanoseconds, delivering the necessary energy to fragment the ink effectively without causing scarring or other undesirable side effects.

Why Multiple Sessions May Be Necessary

Similar to getting a tattoo, removing one requires multiple sessions. This is because tattoo ink is deeply embedded in layers of the skin. Each laser treatment for removal works by breaking down and fragmenting these ink layers, which the body then naturally eliminates in the weeks following each session.

The effectiveness of tattoo removal depends on factors like color, depth, and chemical composition of the ink. The Q-Switched Nd-Yag Laser is particularly effective on darker colors such as black, red, dark orange, and dark blue. Lighter colors like green, purple, brown, light orange, and light blue can also be removed but may require more treatment sessions for optimal results.

Laser tattoo removal works by targeting pigment colors in the skin’s dermis, which lies between your outer layer of skin (epidermis) and the tissue beneath. The tattoo pigments absorb the laser’s beam and fragment. Your body then absorbs these fragments and eliminates them.

You’ll need several treatments before you’ll notice a significant difference. The number of treatments you’ll need depends on the amount and type of ink used and how deeply it sits. Keep in mind it takes a minimum of eight weeks between treatments for your body to absorb the pigment residue.

Prior to a laser tattoo removal treatment, you’ll want to avoid sun exposure for four weeks beforehand. You may be instructed to discontinue taking aspirin and ibuprofen, since they may cause you to bruise after your treatment. Make sure to follow all pre-care instructions your medical professional gives you.

The most common type of laser used in tattoo removal, the Q-switch, produces light pulses of extremely high peak power. Several types of Q-switch lasers exist, and each one targets a different color spectrum at different wavelengths. Because Q-switch lasers are so precise and intense, tattoo pigments fragment instantly, and the surrounding tissue is left undamaged.

Laser tattoo removal can remove most tattoos safely and effectively. In general, older tattoos that have darker pigments tend to be easier to remove than newer ones that have fluorescent pigments. Patients who don’t smoke and follow a healthy diet and exercise regimen tend to achieve the best results.

It is very rare for patients to scar from laser tattoo removal treatments. But if a tattoo already features pre-existing scarring, that will remain.

After laser tattoo removal, it’s common to experience redness and swelling in the treated area, which can last up to 7 days or longer, depending on the depth of the tattoo and individual skin reaction. Occasionally, there may also be bruising, blistering, flaking, peeling and scabbing or crust formation, which typically subside within 2 weeks. These side effects are generally manageable and part of the skin’s healing process following the treatment. Tell your medical professional if any side effects bother you and are not subsiding.

Before the treatment starts a medical professional will apply an anesthetic cream, and you’ll be given protective eye gear to wear, along with a cooling device. The medical professional will then gently place a handpiece against your skin and deliver laser pulses to the tattoo pigment. With each laser pulse, most people experience a sensation similar to a rubber band snapping against their skin. The amount of laser pulses depends on the tattoo’s size, but most treatment sessions only last a few minutes.
